Reconstructed Waterfront Trail East of Adorni Center Completed
In September, reconstruction of the 0.5 mile section of Waterfront Trail was completed between the Adorni Center and east of the Samoa Bridge. It is a terrific improvement over the ancient trail that previously existed. Nevertheless, there are some issues we have identified and discussed with Brittany Powell the City’s Project Manager. Some of the issues identified:
The new connection at the Adorni Center joins the boardwalk along the backside of the Adorni Center. Cyclists who ride that way will then go behind the Aquatic Center and will be greeted by a tall hedge and a right angle turn with no sight distance for potential oncoming cyclists. The safest option for cyclists is to connect to L Street sidewalk ramp to Waterfront Drive. [The HBBCA recommended the boardwalk be signed for pedestrians only.]
At the approach to the boardwalk at the Adorni, there are other issues, including vertical drop-offs to the parking lot and parked vehicles encroaching onto the bike trail. [The City plans to redo the stop bars to prevent vehicles from encroaching onto the bike trail, but currently has no plans to mitigate the drop-offs.]
The HBBCA has been urging the City to stripe a bike lane between the Adorni Center and I Street where an existing bike lane begins. Even though we had received commitments years ago from the former Project Manager, it still hasn’t happened. [The City will look for funding to do that. The only work required is painting. There was previously shoulder striping in this area which has weathered away. And, the bike lane east of L Street has disappeared due to continuous flooding of the roadway due to lack of drainage to control hillside ground water.]
Do You Know Your Bay?
By Oona Smith, HBBCA Member
Humboldt Waterkeeper's new Bay Trail Audio Tour will entertain and amaze you.
When you next bike or walk the trails along Humboldt Bay, you can listen to local experts talk about the bay, its history, and flora and fauna on the free Humboldt Bay Trail Audio Tour from Humboldt Waterkeeper. You can tour 12 miles between the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center and the southern end of the Hikshar’i Trail at Elk River Slough and learn cool—and climate warming—facts about 40 points of interest. Some points on the Tour also cover impacts to the bay caused by climate change and local projects for adapting to climate change, cleaning up brownfields, and restoring marshes and wildlife habitat.
Easily access the Tour by downloading the izi.TRAVEL app onto your phone and clicking the red dot on the map, or you type “Humboldt Bay” in the search bar. Stories play automatically as you pass GPS points.
When it’s raining sideways with gale-force winds and King High Tides, you can sit back near the warmth of your computer and enjoy the Tour (with photos!) on the webpage here: https://izi.travel/en/64f2-humboldt-bay-trail/en
“The tour is fantastic,” says Jennifer Kalt, Humboldt Waterkeeper Executive Director. “Wendy Ring has compiled so many wonderful interviews of experts whose passion for the bay really shines! Plus, I learned about a bunch of things I had never heard about before. It's amazing!”
Thanks to volunteer extraordinaire Wendy Ring and all of the experts who contributed their time and expertise to this wonderful celebration of Humboldt Bay and the Bay Trail! And thanks Humboldt Waterkeeper!

Caltrans Near Completion of “Complete Streets” Project on Broadway in Eureka
The “Complete Streets” project on Broadway in Eureka is nearing completion, between Herrick Avenue and the south end of the Bayshore Mall, a distance of just over 2 miles. The project is intended to enhance safety and operations for pedestrians and bicyclists. As of mid-September, green pavement makings were being added along with bike lane striping, including a 3-foot buffer where width permits. Green and white plastic posts will be added to the buffer areas. The bike lane varies in width from about 5 feet to 8 feet. As part of the project, a micropaving lift was added to the traffic lanes but not to the bike lane area which unfortunately includes a lot of “patched segments,” so it’s not as smooth as it could have been. Nevertheless, it is a vast improvement for cyclists.
The HBBCA would like to extend our condolences to the family of Ronnie Franklin, 20, of McKinleyville who was tragically killed by a drunk driver on the night of September 23rd. Mr. Franklin was working for a contractor on this project as part of nighttime construction.
Cyclists and Pedestrians Frustrated by Waterfront Trail Closures in Vicinity of Del Norte Street in Eureka
Since July, cyclists and pedestrians have encountered a near continuous closure of the bike trail at Del Norte Street to the south. Even on weekends they leave the closure signs up. And from the connection at Herrick, there are no warning signs of the closure, until you reach it. There is a rough gravel 200 foot long detour that one might find on their own. The closure is due to a City project funded by the Coastal Commission to add some resiliency in response to Climate Change and flooding. It is likely that the project will go on until November.
The League of American Bicyclists Taking on the Trump Administration Attack on Bike Lanes
In June, the Secretary of Transportation railed against “DEI bike lanes.” Then, in July the U.S. Department of Transportation removed bike lanes, road diets and speed management from their list of Proven Safety Countermeasures website. Now, the Administration released transportation priorities that would block all federal funding for bike infrastructure and actively support ripping bike lanes to dedicate more pavement to the motor vehicle users. The League of American Bicyclists are doing all they can to reverse this assault. They encourage cyclists to contact their Congressional representatives…….just in case they might be able to do something about it. [Editorial Comment]
Who to Call When You See a Safety Concern (Rev. 7/10/26)
The HBBCA periodically checks with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine appropriate contact personnel to respond to bike-related issues. If you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists such as a pothole in a bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, the need to clear vegetation encroaching on a shoulder, or a street light that is out, call the responsible agency/person listed below. Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate attention, like a stop sign knocked down, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency conditions, the following contact information is provided:
