NEXT
MEETING IN EUREKA ON
JANUARY 24
The next HBBCA meeting will be held at Chapala’s Mexican Restaurant on January 24th. It will be dinner meeting (dinner optional),
starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. Those who attend set the agenda. One item to be discussed will be continued
efforts on Strategic Planning for the HBBCA. Initial
brain-storming was done by those in attendance at the November meeting. In March, the HBBCA will hold a focused meeting to help finalize short,
medium and long range direction for the organization.
SEVERAL BIKE/PEDESTRIAN PROJECTS IN THE WORKS IN HUMBOLDT
COUNTY
Here is an update on
projects being undertaken in Humboldt County to improve conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians. Humboldt County, and Chris
Whitworth, Deputy
Director for Engineering, is to be commended for their initiative in pursuing
these projects, several of which are HBBCA priorities.
Myrtle Avenue, Hall Avenue to Mitchell Heights—The County received nearly $600,000 in State bikeway grant funds to
widen shoulders and the Ryan Slough Bridge for bike shoulders. The
environmental document is approved.
Construction is scheduled for Summer ’06.
Hiller Road, Central to
Hammond Trail in McKinleyville—Class II bike lanes—will be applying for funding
in February.
Walnut Drive, Cypress to Avalon, south of Eureka—Class II bike lanes. The County will receive TEA funding. Construction scheduled for this summer.
Hammond Trail, the gap
from Murray to Letz, is funded for
design from the Coastal Conservancy.
Construction funding from the Conservancy is likely once design and
environmental approval is completed.
Old Arcata Road, Mitchell Heights to Bayside—roadway widening for this section is still delayed pending
funding from the State Transportation Improvement Program, which is very short
on funding at this time.
Sidewalks approved under
the Safe Routes to Schools Program:
McKinleyville Avenue—Railroad
to Murray Road; and Central Avenue—Bates to Murray (with shoulder widening Murray to Airport Road)
WHO TO CALL WHEN YOU SEE A SAFETY CONCERN (Revised 6/04)
The HBBCA has checked
with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine
who to contact if you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to
improve the safety or convenience for cyclists.
This might include a pothole in the bike lane, accumulated debris on a
roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, or the need to clear
vegetation encroaching on the shoulder.
Of course, if you
see a condition that requires immediate emergency action, call 9-1-1.
For other conditions, the following is provided:
