NEXT  REGULAR MEETING IN EUREKA ON MAY 16—NEW TIME

The next regular HBBCA meeting will be held at Chapala’s  Mexican Restaurant at

2nd and C Streets in Eureka on Monday,

May 16th.  It will be a dinner meeting (dinner optional), starting at 6:00 p.m.  The meeting itself will begin at 6:30.   This is an earlier start than in the past, but we decided to start earlier, so we can end earlier.   The meeting is open to the public.  Those who attend help set the agenda.   Some items to discuss include the Bike to Work Day Rallies to be held later in the week; the May 22nd Youth Bike/Skate Festival; and HBBCA Draft Policies.

BIKE TO WORK RALLIES TO BE HELD IN EUREKA AND ARCATA MAY 19 & 20

The HBBCA will be hosting Bike to Work Day rallies in Eureka on May 19 and Arcata on May 20.   This is the 11th consecutive Bike to Work Day hosted by the HBBCA.  Please participate and get others to join you.   Please refer to the special flyer and pledge sheet included in this newsletter for all the details.   Please post the flyer in your workplace.   Thanks.  See you there!

BIG THINGS IN STORE FOR THE HBBCA

Some 22 years after its creation, big things are just ahead for the HBBCA.

After a thought-provoking meeting with individuals from other bike-related organizations, HBBCA members and local officials, several new ideas were raised.  In addition many old ideas were given new life.  Already, follow-up actions have taken place on several fronts.

Sherri Dobay of Dobay Designs has volunteered to develop a website for the HBBCA.   Sherri previously developed the HBBCA logo.   She is designing the site while Board members provide the information to be included on the site.  The site, once activated, will be www.humbike.org.  The site will include past and present newsletters, event calendar, information and links to other bike organizations, Bike Smart Safety brochure and information on training classes, membership application, information on how to report road hazards, links to legislators and the Governor, and more.

Another idea proposed was establishment of specific policies which would guide the activities and actions of the organization.   An initial draft has been developed.  Watch for developments in future newsletters.

The BikeSmart safety brochure developed in 1994 will be improved and modernized with the expert touch of Sherri Dobay.   The safety brochure will be made available to bike shops, police organizations, public health, and other organizations involved with bike safety work.

All of this work will be likely completed in May and June.

YOUTH BIKE/SKATE SAFETY FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN EUREKA ON MAY 22—HBBCA OFFERING GRAND PRIZE

On May 22, at the Marshall complex across from Eureka High, a Youth Bike/Skate Safety Festival will be held from 11am till 3 pm.   Parents are encouraged to bring their children, along with their bikes and helmets.   The HBBCA will host the bike elements portion of the festival, including helmet fitting, bike inspections, bike safety, and tire repair.  Rick Knapp is coordinating for HBBCA.  Call Rick if you’d like to help. (445-1097)

HBBCA Board members donated to the HBBCA the amount required for the HBBCA to be able to purchase and donate a Trek 3500, 21 speed, mountain bike, for a grand prize.  Will Spurling of Henderson Center Bicycles sold the bike to us at his cost.   There will be a free drawing for the bike and many other prizes.

HBBCA ENDORSES CANDIDATES FOR LOCAL/REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Mary Scoggin has been recommended for the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Humboldt County Association of Governments.

Steve Jones has been recommended for membership on the Arcata Transportation Safety Committee.

WALK/BIKE CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER

WHO TO CALL WHEN YOU SEE A SAFETY CONCERN (Revised 6/04)

The HBBCA has checked with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine whom to contact if you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve the safety or convenience for cyclists.  This might include a pothole in the bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, or the need to clear vegetation encroaching on the shoulder.
